Graphic design for an exhibition celebrating women in Trinidad and Tobago.

Out of the blue, sometime in January 2019, I received a call from Bobby Campbell at SCRIP-J printery: he was sitting with artist Danielle Salloum, who was getting ready for her upcoming exhibition that celebrated Trinidadian women, and would I be willing to take on the design for the exhibition invitation, catalogue, and other supporting materials? Among other things, Sisterhood would be a show of Danielle’s photographs of these women, which she enhanced by hand with paint and gold leaf. I was intrigued but, due to time constraints, also a little hesitant. Once I met with Danielle, though, I fully committed to the project. She’s passionate about what she does and good at it; she’s also genuinely kind and positive – even during crunch time, every meeting with her was a delight.

We came up with the strategy of having Danielle produce a painting with gold leaf as the main exhibition image and, from there, I played up the gold to highlight the main exhibition title, which was executed in a stencil font. I also took key recurring elements of Danielle’s paintings and used them as motifs throughout the catalogue and other exhibition materials such as sponsors’ posters and wall labels. Sisterhood took place at the Art Society of Trinidad and Tobago from 22–31 March, 2019. The opening reception featured a performance by Deneka Thomas and remarks by Her Excellency Paula-Mae Weekes, ORTT, President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago – fitting, as they were both featured in the exhibition!
