See Me Here

A survey of contemporary self portraits from the Caribbean

See Me Here calls attention to recent directions in self-portraiture throughout the English-speaking Caribbean, by focusing on the work of 25 artists who frequently or significantly use their physical selves, or those to whom they are linked by blood or significant experience, as an avenue for exploration and expression. Of particular interest with this book were the debates co-editor Mariel Brown and I had as to what constitutes self-portraiture – both with ourselves and with others. Quite a few of the works here are self-evident, but others require an open mind and a shifting and blurring of traditional definitions. On this publication, too, we made the decision to include controversial and uncomfortable works to celebrate the freedom of expression and bravery of many of the artists included.

See Me Here is the second of Robert & Christopher’s planned thematic explorations of contemporary art throughout the English-speaking Caribbean.
