Creative direction and graphic design of a book on the city of Port of Spain.

Winner: Gold ADDY for Book Design (2022)

Back in 2009, I worked with architect + architectural photographer Brian Lewis as graphic designer on Manikin – a book on his father’s practice, on which he was editor. A few years later, we worked on our second book together – Contemporary Caribbean Architecture. No surprise, then, that we would again collaborate on Brian’s third book – Port of Spain: An Architectural Record.

Port of Spain features literally hundreds of photographs that Brian took of notable facades throughout the city’s seven districts. The images are sequenced by district moving west to east, with buildings paired mainly based on architectural similarities, sometimes based on architectural differences, and every now and then based on interesting sequencing along a street. Essays on the city’s history and its future bookend the photographs, while spreads of charts and maps introduce each district and provide a valuable and alternative way to see the city.
